AS-SARRAJ, EYAD RAJAB (1944-)

Born in Beersheba on 27 April 1944 to a family originally from Gaza; studied Medicine at Alexandria University, Egypt, from 1963-1971; was an active member of the GUPS, at times also serving as deputy head; was a student representative to the first PNC in Jerusalem in 1964; spent a year at Alexandria University Hospital in 1970-71, then Senior House Officer, Pediatrics, Shifa Hospital, Gaza, in 1971-72; worked as registrar at the Psychiatry Dept. of the Bethlehem Mental Hospital from 1972-73; won a WHO scholarship and studied at the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London from 1974, earning a Diploma in Psychological Medicine in 1977; returned and worked as Psychiatrist in the Dept. of Health in Gaza from 1977-81, then became Director of Mental Health Services, Gaza, from 1981-88; also taught psychiatry and psychology in the School of Nursing in Gaza from 1979-84 and gives training courses in mental health; also specialized in Psychiatry Child and Family and Psycho-geriatrics, in Cornwall, UK, during 1986-87; was a founding member of the Gaza Medical Association; spent nine months as research fellow at the Refugee Studies Program, Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford, during 1989-90; member of the London-based Palestinian International Society for Mental Health since 1990; founded the Gaza Community Mental Health Program (GCMHP) in 1990 and serves as its Director since; has also worked on environmental issues in Gaza since 1991 and is a human rights and peace activist; became a member of the EuroGaza program since 1992; was part of the Palestinian negotiating team during the Israeli-Palestinian bi-lateral peace talks in the early 1990s; former PNC member; member of many local and international health and human rights organizations, incl. the American Psychiatric Association, Washington, the World Federation of Mental Health, the International Society of Political Psychology, US, the International Federation of Physicians for Human Rights, and the Arab Psychiatric Association; founding member of the Arab Medical Association Palestine, the Campaign Against Torture in the Middle East, the International Federation for Health and Human Rights, the Palestine Democratic Forum - Palestine, the Palestinian Physicians for Human Rights, Palestine, and PICCR (1993); head of the Mental Health Committee in the Palestinian Health Council; served as PICCR’s Commissioner General from Aug. 1995-1998 and is member of its Board of Commissioners; was arrested by the PA three times during 1995-96 for his criticism of human rights violations under the PA and after refusing to sign a pledge not to criticize the PA; received the Physicians for Human Rights Award, Boston, in 1997 and the Martin Ennals Award for human rights defenders in 1998; is a member of Physicians for Human Rights and the Campaign Against Torture in the Middle East; Sec.-Gen. of AMAN-IRCT (Network of Centers of Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture in the Middle East and North Africa); member of the Movement of Democratic Building; Board of Trustees member of the Arab Studies Society in Jerusalem, of the Palestine Center Against Violence, and MIFTAH, Ramallah; Vice-Pres. of the Palestinian Technology and Education Complex (PTEC) in Gaza; has extensively written on issues of human rights, mental health, civil society, and the socio-psychological impacts of the Intifada and violence in general, especially on children; formed and headed the ‘Wa’ad List’ (National Coalition for Justice and Democracy) in late 2005 but ran unsuccessfully in the Jan. 2006 PLC elections.

السراج، إياد (1944- ) ولد في بير السبع عام 1944 لعائلة أصلها من غزة ؛درس الطب في جامعة الإسكندرية في مصر من (1963-1971)؛ قضى عاماً كمشرف منزلي رئيس في مستشفى جامعة الإسكندرية في (1970-1971) ثم عمل في قسم طب الأطفال في مستشفى الشفاة في غزة ,من (1971-1972) عمل كمسجل لقسم الأمراض النفسية في مستشفى بيت لحم العقلي من (1973-1972) حصل على منحة منظمة الصحة العالمية ودرس في معهد الأمراض النفسية في جامعة لندن عام 1974؛ حصل على دبلوم في الطب النفسي عام 1977؛ وعمل كطبيب نفسي في قسم الصحة في غزة من (1977-1981) ,ثم أصبح مدير للخدمات الصحية العقلية في غزة من (1981-1988)؛ كما علم الطب النفسي في معهد التمريض في غزة من (1979-1984)؛ تخصص أيضا في نفسية الأطفال والعائلة وكبار السن في كورن ول، المملكة المتحدة، خلال (1989-1987)؛ كان عضو مؤسس للهيئة الطبية في غزة قضى تسعة أشهر كباحث متابع لبرنامج دراسات اللاجئين، منزل الملكة إليزابيث جامعة أكسفورد، خلال (1990- 1989)؛ عضو في الجمعية الفلسطينية الدولية للصحة العقلية مقرها لندن عام 1990؛ أسس جمعية غزة لبرنامج المجتمع الصحي العقلي (GCMHP) في 1990 وعمل كرئيسها؛ كما عمل في المواضيع البيئي ة في غزة 1991 وحقوق الإنسان وناشط في السلام؛ أصبح عضواً في برنامج عام 1992 كان عضو الوفد الفلسطيني خلال محادثات السلام الإسرائيلية الفلسطينية عام 1991؛ عضو في كثير من المنظمات الصحية العالمية والمحلية وحقوق الإنسان، رئيس هيئة الصحة العقلية في المجلس الفلسطيني للصحة؛ اعتقل من قبل السلطة الفلسطينية ثلاث مرات خلال (1995-1996) لانتقاده لعنف السلطة الفلسطينية لحقوق الإنسان ورفضه توقيع تعهد لعدم نقض السلطة الفلسطينية؛ حصل على جائزة الطب النفسي لحقوق الإنسان، بوستون، في 1997 وجائزة مارتن انالس لمدافع عن حقوق الإنسان في 1998؛ عضو الطب النفسي لحقوق الإنسان والحملة ضد التعذيب في الشرق الأوسط؛ منسق الشبكة المركزية لإعادة التأهيل لضحايا العنف والتعذيب في الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا؛ كتب بشكل واسع في مواضيع تتعلق بحقوق الإنسان، الصحة العقلية، المجتمع المدني، وبشكل عام تأثيرات علم النفس المجتمعي للانتفاضة و العنف، خصوصاً على الأطفال.
