The Greek Orthodox ceremony of the Washing of the Feet at the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem on Maundy Thursday, with the Patriarch of Jerusalem in attendance. The Greek Orthodox community was the largest Christian group in Palestine. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries it went through turmoil, as local Arab members of the church grew increasingly resentful of the Greek clergy. They demanded that Arabs should be allowed to rise in the ranks of the clergy and be eligible for the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
