Ragheb Nashashibi reading the address of welcome to the first High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel, in 1920. A leading member of a powerful Jerusalem family which played an important part in politics throughout the mandate, Nashashibi presented the section of Palestinian society which, while rejecting Zionism, generally wanted to find a modus vivendi with the British.
