PUBLICATIONS

One aspect of the work of PASSIA’s Religious Studies Unit is research and publication. In 2007/08, the Unit embarked on a special research project on Palestinian Holy Siteswhich aims at listing Holy Sites and describe their religious significance as well as their Biblical/Qur’anic origins and references, and which is hoped to serve as a guide to the mosques, churches, burial places, and other sites of worship in historical Palestine. Work on this endeavor has proceeded with several researchers (mainly Christine Seisun and Michael Sadleir) who helped identify, compile and organize relevant materials. Proofreading and final editing is still pending, however, since the publishing priority was waved in favor of a publication on Islamic Culture (see below), which was demanded by several organizations for use in local educational and religious institutions. It is hoped that work on the book on Holy Sites can be completed and printed within the next year.

Also as part of its publication program, PASSIA finalized the editing of a publication on Jesus.

Jesus in the Christian and Muslim Faiths
English, 58 pages, Dec. 2007

It forms part of a series of monographs dealing with religious figures which PASSIA has published over the past few years. So far, editions on Abraham, Moses, Joseph and have been produced.

The book on Jesus contains the proceedings of a workshop held under the same name, which discussed one of the most passionately told and perceived narratives in Christianity as well as in Islam, i.e., that of Jesus Christ, or Isa Ibn Maryam: his birth, his words and deeds, his disciples and followers and his mother, the Virgin Mary. The publication commissioned two versions of Jesus’ story by Christian (Father Rafiq Khoury from the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem) and Muslim (Dr. Mustafa Abu Sway from Al-Quds University in Jerusalem) scholars to help understand people's beliefs in Jesus and the special places they hold in both the Holy Qur'an and the Bible.
Work on a third publication - Introduction to Islamic Culture - was also completed. The publication is presented as a text book to be used in universities and elsewhere and contains 12 academic papers dealing with subjects such as History of Islam, Faith in Islam, The Concept of Sunna and Hadith, The Islamic Economy, Women in Islam, Islam and other Monotheistic FaithsIslam and Science, and Arabic Language and the Islamic Culture.
