Palestinian religious
figures and academics comment on the US Annual Report on International
Religious Freedom
Summary
of a live TV discussion program with Mr. Robert Seibel; head of the 'International
Religious Freedom Department', US Department of State and Saudi and Palestinian
personalities
Palestinian Participants:
Dr. Mahdi Abdul Hadi, Dr. Mustafa Abu Sway, Ibrahim Qandalaft, Father
Majdi Siriani, Father Na'im Ateeq, Abdul Halim Ayesh, Samir Qumsieh.
In the live
TV program "World Net" Saudi personalities, as well as Palestinian religious
figures and academics criticized the US Annual Report on International
Religious Freedom which was released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human
Rights, and Labor, US Department of State on the 5th of September,
2000. Their criticism was mainly based on the fact that the report failed
to address any of the numerous Israeli violations vis-a-vis Islamic and
Christian holy places in the Palestinian territories and within Israel
property.
Dr. Mahdi Abdul
Hadi and Dr. Mustafa Abu Swai participated in the live discussion as representatives
of PASSIA's Religious Studies Unit. Dr. Abu Swai mentioned that a mosque
in Tiberias had been closed and turned into a carpet factory, while, against
a ruling by the supreme court, the first floor of a mosque in Yaffa had
been converted into a plastic factory and the second floor into a restaurant
and coffee shop. Dr. Abdul Hadi said: "This may cause things to deteriorate,
it is true that this conflict has a religious perspective, but the most
important are the political and the national ones. This land is part of
the Occupied Territories where all the UN Resolutions should be implemented
and where religious freedom should be practiced."
