CONFERENCES & WORKSHOPS

1993

The Palestinian-Israeli Declaration of Principles: Current and Future Prospects.
December 17th 1993. Birzeit University, West Bank.

SUMMARY:

The first session at this one day conference was on the "Nature and Significance of the Accord" and was chaired by Isiah Jad and addressed by Dr. Ibrahim Abu Lughod, Dr. Ali Jarbawi, Dr. Khalil Shikaki and Dr. Riad Malki. The second session, chaired by Dr. Roger Heacock and addressed by Raja Shehadeh, Dr. Ziad Abu Amr and Dr. Ahmed Harb concerned "Direct Implications of the Accord". The third and final session on "The Accord and the Future Viability of the Palestinian Entity" was addressed by Dr. Salim Tamari, Ibrahim al-Daqqaq, Dr. Nabeel Kassis and Dr. Azmi Bishara. It was chaired by Dr. Mahdi Abdul Hadi of PASSIA. The emphasis was on Palestinian zeal to continue creating facts on the ground and build national authority through the transitional period in a move towards independent statehood. This could be seen as a historical process for regional settlement and normalisation of Arab/Israeli or simply as an end to a historic conflict.
