TRAINING PROGRAMS AND SEMINARS

All training programs and seminars are required to meet the highest standards of professionalism in organization, instruction, student participation, and practical applicability. In general, PASSIA seminar and training programs are structured and organized as follows:

  1. Consultation. In preparation for each seminar or training course, PASSIA consults with colleagues and experts in the relevant field - both locally and internationally - to plan and implement the training program in accordance with advanced techniques.

  2. Application. Programs and seminars are advertised in the local press with a stated three-week application period. Deadlines set for applications are strict and non-negotiable. Application is open for anyone fitting preset transparent criteria. In addition to course relevancy for the applicant's career, the following are required:

    - a BA degree or its equivalent from a credible university (non-graduates with relevant   experience and a serious interest to enhance their skills are also welcome to apply)
    - ability to commit oneself full-time throughout the required period
    - ability to commit oneself to undertake preparatory reading and written work
    - a good knowledge of written and spoken English

  3. Interviews and Selection of Participants. Short-listed applicants are subsequently invited for interviews. Selection is based on both interviews and strength of application. In accordance with PASSIA's commitment to a non-biased, apolitical selection process, interviews are conducted by an external party, who selects both primary candidates and alternates. Upon selection, participants must confirm their commitment to full-time participation in writing and submit a letter from their employers confirming their exemption from work during the required period.

  4. Course Preparation. Upon selection and submission of the required acceptance letters, participants are provided with a preparatory reading package. This aims to familiarize participants with basic seminar issues in advance of the seminar. Furthermore, each participant is given a paper assignment on a subject related to the seminar. The presentation of this paper is an integral part of the actual course program and a decisive factor in certificate award.

  5. Training Programs and Seminars. During the intensive course itself (usually 4-7 days full-time) local and international experts will introduce key issues and establish a fundamental background on the conceptual frameworks and practical aspects of the respective subject matter. PASSIA training courses combine lecturers, discussions and exercises. Practical application of skills is emphasized throughout with various presentations, group exercises, and role-plays. Where possible, PASSIA courses are followed by subsequent one to two-day workshops. The major aim is to further enhance participants' skills through pre-workshop analytical assignments and classroom activity. Participants are expected to attend all sessions full-time during the entire duration of the program and fulfill all requirements.

  6. Instructors and Contents. PASSIA strives to ensure that course instructors are knowledgeable in the respective field and experienced in the skills required to effectively present the topic and impart the desired teaching goals.

Emphasis is placed on interactive learning vice lecture; the instructor's ability to engage participants is imperative.

PASSIA programs include activities that call on participants to link the training to actual issues or real-world situations (e.g., experiences at the institutions with which they are involved) and actively employ the information they learn in their environment (e.g., places of employment).

  7. Conclusion. At the close of a training program or seminar, course participants anonymously fill evaluation forms. Information derived from participant evaluations assists PASSIA in designing follow-up activities as well as future programs while verifying the degree of the participants' satisfaction.

A post-training internal review is conducted to verify the appropriateness of the program as well as teaching materials and techniques. Modifications to future programs are based on internal audits, participants' feedback and continuously refined need assessments.

Upon completion of the program, participants who performed all required tasks will be presented a certificate affirming successful participation in the training program. In addition, PASSIA edits and publishes the proceedings in the form of a report or handbook.
